A Chinese cybergroup helped spread false claims about the Nord Stream blasts, a cybersecurity firm says.

A Chinese-backed cybergroup has been involved in spreading false claims that the United States was behind the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream pipelines running from Russia to Germany, the cybersecurity firm Mandiant reported Wednesday.

The blasts, in late September, near the two giant natural gas pipelines in busy international waters, were swiftly attributed to sabotage and increased deep concerns over the prospect of painful energy shortages in Europe this winter. Experts said it could take months to assess and repair the damage.

American officials said they do not know who was responsible for the blast, and there is not yet enough evidence to draw any conclusions. The Kremlin has long used its European deliveries of natural gas as leverage to try to fracture the West’s united front against its invasion of Ukraine.
