海綿動物は化粧や浴用スポンジの原料として有名ですが、このほど北極海の海底山にて、数千単位の海綿動物の群れ、いわば”スポンジの楽園”が発見されました。
群れはすでに300才以上に達していますが、このエリアは栄養価が低く、食べるものがほとんどありません。
そんな場所で、どうやって生き長らえることができたのか。
マックスプランク海洋微生物学研究所(Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology・独)の調査により、彼らは絶滅した生物の亡骸をゆっくり消化することで生き延びていると判明しました。
