水は100度で気体の水蒸気となり、0度で固体の氷に相転移する物質であると知られていますが、0度を下回っても氷にならない過冷却水や特殊な液体であるアモルファス氷など、実はさまざまな状態が確認されています。新たにイギリスのバーミンガム大学とイタリアのローマ・ラ・サピエンツァ大学の研究チームが、アモルファス氷における2つの状態を区別する特徴を、コンピューターシミュレーションを用いて明らかにしました。
