Thomas was a former swimmer for the University of Pennsylvania and his decision to compete against women after his transgender surgery spurred controversy. The issue of trans-females competing in female sports has been the most questioned cultural manifestation in modern times. It started with Renee Richards, a transgender, who decided to compete against women in tennis after leaving a career as a male tennis player.

Many women and even feminists have urged lawmakers that allowing trans women to compete in female sports is not progressive but rather regressive and is a step backwards for women’s rights.

“The average man is much stronger then the average women,” according to Matt Brzycki Coordinator of Health Fitness, Strength and Conditioning Programs Princeton University. In the ESPN segment Thomas echoed what she believes other think saying, ‘Oh, she just transitioned so she would have an advantage so she could win.’ I transitioned to be happy.”

Although Thomas may have transitioned for what she claims to be personal reasons does this mean it can be at at the risk of taking happiness away from all the female swimmers who don’t stand a chance against someone who is a biological male. Riley Gains a swimmer from the University of Kentucky slammed Lia Thomas on twitter saying “Lia Thomas is not a brave, courageous woman who EARNED a national title. He is an arrogant, cheat who STOLE a national title from a hardworking, deserving woman.”
