Defence Ministry admits AFU retreating from a number of positions in Bakhmut
13:27, 20 April 2023.

The Ukrainian Defence Ministry has admitted that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are retreating from a number of positions in Bakhmut. It is difficult to hold it because the city is being destroyed by the Russian side.


This was reported by Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar in an interview with ICTV.

"The situation there is very difficult. They are completely destroying the city, in such conditions it is difficult to hold the positions. In some areas they manage to move forward, but Bakhmut is standing, we are inflicting incredible losses on the enemy in both infantry and equipment," Malyar said.

According to her, Ukraine is forced to use maximum resources to defend itself. But it is also conducting active assault actions.

New EU sanctions against Russia will be limited to measures against circumvention of past restrictions. There will be no more new sanctions against entire sectors of the Russian economy.


Most officials admit that sectors of the economy unaffected by the sanctions will not fall under the restrictions because one or more EU states depend on them.

For example, France, Hungary and other states are said to have opposed sanctions on Rosatom, which Germany supports.

"We are done with sanctions. If we impose more sanctions, there will be more exemptions from sanctions than sanctions measures," the source said.

Switzerland has refused to officially join REPO, a multilateral body of Western countries that seeks and seizes property linked to Russia on the basis of sanctions.

This was announced by Swiss Federal Council spokesman André Simonazzi, SRF reported.

The REPO task force includes US finance and justice ministers, representatives from Australia, Britain, Germany, Italy, Canada, France, Japan, as well as the European Commission.

According to the statement, cooperation between Switzerland and the REPO member states is going smoothly, and therefore the confederation sees no reason to officially join the initiative.

We shall remind you that in January it was reported that Switzerland was not against handing over frozen Russian assets for Ukraine's recovery, but this might require a referendum. Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said that the country had frozen 7.5bn francs (8.2bn dollars) worth of Russian assets, but according to the country's legislation, they cannot be confiscated.

After Bakhmut: Draining Battle Leaves Ukraine Battered, Russia Rising

There is nothing patriotic about an American flying a Ukrainian flag. Nor is there anything treasonous about an American questioning unlimited support for a foreign nation in a foreign war. To recognize that Ukraine will not defeat Russia without much greater American intervention is not pro-Russian, it is pro-reality.

Between 2014 and 2022 there was a violent, separatist insurrection in eastern Ukraine. To prevent Russian intervention, the government in Kiev constructed a line of strongly fortified towns and supply routes along its eastern border. Bakhmut was an important transportation hub in that network.

Five months ago, when we wrote that Bakhmut would eventually fall to the Russians, some readers of these pages scoffed at us. Didn't we understand that Ukraine was winning the war? Well, the Ukrainians put up a remarkable defense in what has become the bloodiest battle of the 21st century, but most of Bakhmut, including the vital rail lines, has fallen. It took longer than we expected, but this defeat has made it even less likely that Ukraine can reestablish its 2014 borders without the direct intervention of NATO troops.

How often have we heard that poorly trained, poorly led, poorly equipped Russian troops, many of them mercenaries and ex-convicts, have suffered staggering losses and been driven back from territory they initially captured? This may all be true. It does not change the fact that Russia is now poised to take full advantage of the fall of Bakhmut once dry summer weather arrives.

Ukraine defended Bakhmut despite U.S. warnings in leaked documents

BAKHMUT, Ukraine — Months after dire warnings from Washington that Ukraine would not be able to hold Bakhmut against an onslaught of Russian mercenaries, Ukrainian forces still cling to the city’s western edge in what has stretched into the longest and most deadly fight of the war.

U.S. assessments were bleak as early as January, according to previously unreported classified U.S. intelligence documents leaked allegedly by Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, and obtained by The Washington Post. Washington warned of the potential encirclement of Ukraine’s forces in Bakhmut and suggested Kyiv should cut its losses and let the city go.

An assessment marked “top secret” cautioned that “steady” Russian advances since November “had jeopardized Ukraine’s ability to hold the city,” and Ukrainian forces would probably be “at risk of encirclement, unless they withdraw within the next month.”
